Do you remember the day you got your license? Do you recall the elation and freeing feeling of being able to get in your car and go where you wanted? These feelings are felt by many who pass the required license test in their state of residency. On that day, a person understands and appreciates, perhaps more than at any other time, the real privilege of driving on American roads. Certainly, there are millions of Americans who are afforded such a privilege because they drive responsibly. But as time wears on, and the novelty of driving wears off, many drivers become complacent. Regardless of position, wealth, or societal class, anyone can be guilty of negligent driving—even the police.

On January 12, 2014, Officer Jonathan DePrenda was driving near the Third and Railway Street intersection in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. DePrenda was rushing to the aid of another officer who was involved in a high-speed pursuit. The police officer was traveling between 98 and 101 miles per hour with his lights and sirens on. The posted speed limit in the area was 35 miles per hour.

As Officer DePrenda entered into the intersection, his cruiser struck a vehicle being driven by 42-year old Williamsport resident, James Robinson. The impact pushed Robinson’s car into a utility pole and a vacant house, where it burst into flames. Mr. Robinson was killed as a result of the crash. His estate brought a lawsuit against the City of Williamsport and Officer DePrenda and is currently negotiating a settlement.

Criminal charges also have been brought against Officer Deprenda for vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter. In addition, he has been suspended with pay from the Williamsport Police Department. According to Police Chief Michael Orwig, he is continuing to receive pay because the internal investigation is not yet complete.

In traumatic car accidents such as this one, the devastation wrought can be both physical and emotional in nature. Injuries can be so severe that they prevent people from returning to their previous lifestyles. When the ability to work is affected, courts may also consider the long-term financial implications for car accident victims, and award money damages accordingly.

Dick Van Dyke Rescued From His Vehicle Before Frightening Car Explosion

The 87 year-old Dick Van Dyke, a popular actor, comedian and writer whose carrier spans seven decades, was driving to a dentist appointment on the afternoon of Monday August 19th, on the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles, California. Suddenly, the car began to smoke and Van Dyke managed to abandon the vehicle shortly before it exploded.

Van Dyke’s Jaguar inexplicably began to smoke as the actor was driving along the shoulder of the freeway. Van Dyke pulled over and alerted emergency services. An ambulance that was very close to the scene of the car accident pulled up and the paramedics helped pull Van Dyke out of the smoking car. The rescue came just in the nick of time, as the Jaguar exploded a short time after Van Dyke and his rescuers walked away from the car.

Van Dyke is reportedly doing well after the explosion accident, and he refused medical treatment. Van Dyke’s wife tweeted a photograph of the smoking carcass of his car and stated that Van Dyke is doing well and is resting after the accident.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol has stated that Van Dyke was not cited for the accident.

Car Falls Upside Down Into A House In Medford, Massachusetts

A car crashed into a house in Medford, Massachusetts in the early morning hours on August 3, 2013. Witnesses state that the car was rolling down a hill when it crashed into a pole and flipped into the house. They described a screeching sound as if the brakes were malfunctioning. Evidently the driver ran out of gas at the top of the hill, and gravity brought him back down, building up enough momentum to flip the whole vehicle.

Medford Police have indicated that a mechanical failure with the vehicle is likely to blame for the car accident. They say that the driver was not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the car crash. The residents were in the house at the time of the crash, but luckily no one in the house was injured.

The driver of the car was looked over by paramedics at the scene of the crash, but he appeared to be fine and refused any further medical treatment.

Medford Police have not revealed whether the driver will be fined or charged, if at all.
